I Need To Take More Showers

I need to take more showers. Well, not because I’m stinky or anything, but because I get some of my best ideas for images when I’m in the shower. After many, many years of taking showers the process has become a bit automatic. Start at my head end at my feet and hit all the bits in between. It’s a bit like breathing, I don’t have to think about it most of the time. Because I don’t have to think about what I’m doing, my mind shifts in neutral. This is where the ideas start because my mind never stays…

Being aware of your surroundings.

This morning as I was driving to Fredericksburg to have some regular maintenance done on one of our cars. I drove through some moderate rain showers and I became aware, once again, of how many people don’t pay much attention to what is going on around them, until the last minute. As photographers we should be aware of everything that is going on around us, not only when we are making images but also when we are looking for things to photograph. I’m sure you have seen images on the interwebs of nature photographers being photo bombed by the very…

Finding Inspiration

How do you find the inspiration that helps you create the images you really love? Finding inspiration at the best of times can be very frustrating. If you have a deadline and need to send ideas to someone for a project you can multiply that panic. When ideas are not coming and you are getting close to the deadline true panic can set in and shut you down. Deadlines can cause panic with a very paralyzing effect. Being open to all the possibilities and all the possible creative influences is one way to unlock the inner creative ideas that you…

My 365 Project

I have seen many people start a 365 Project, some finish and some don’t. What they all have in common is coming up with 365 images to post every day of the year. Well I’m not going to post new stuff for my project but I will post everyday, starting with today. You can see my posts at Posterous.com as I post them. What will I be posting if not a new image taken everyday to post that day? Well I have a huge backlog of images that I want to catalogue and for the life of me I’m not…

Do you need a studio?

Quite often I hear from other photographers, “If only I had a studio.” To which I ask, “Where do you shoot now?”  The responses are as varied as what different photographers like to photograph. Having a studio would be great. I’ve worked in a bunch of them. In fact I have helped three photographers build their studios and I was asked for my input on the design of studio for a large national non-profit that I used to work for on a freelance basis. Currently I don’t have a studio, in fact, I have never had a studio of my…

A few ideas for finding inspiration

I’m like most photographers that I have known, in that I have a very active imagination. Ideas fly through my mind at what seems to be an alarming rate. Here one second and then gone. While I am walking to another room to get something that I need an idea or image pops into my head. I start thinking about that idea or image so intently that by the time I get to where I needed to go, I have forgotten what I needed to get! Many people call these “senior moments”. Well, I’ve been having these senior moments for…
